Gruene
Pronounced like the color "green," this little gem inside of New Braunfels is the heart of tourism in the town. The food is incredible and loved just as much by locals as it is by visitors. Some of the most popular restaurants include the Gristmill, Gruene River Grill, and Mose’s. Gristmill and Gruene River Grill are tucked away in the backyard of Gruene, overlooking the Guadalupe River. Two newer additions to the scene are The Birdhouse, serving up fresh country-style chicken, and Tacos and Tequila, where Tex meets Mex in the best way.
Gruene changes with the seasons, always bringing something festive and fun. For Thanksgiving, there's the annual Turkey Trot, and during the winter months, the town lights up with Christmas décor and even an outdoor ice skating rink. In the spring and summer, that same space transforms into a miniature golf course, drawing in tourists and giving locals something fresh to enjoy right in their own backyard. Seasonal pop-up shops and local vendors often line the streets during events, like Gruene Market Days, adding to the small-town charm.
What makes Gruene so special is that it offers something for everyone. Whether it’s a family vacation, a bachelorette party, or a first date, there’s magic to be found. This small corner of town is where history meets country music. Gruene Hall, the oldest dance hall in Texas, has hosted legendary country artists such as Willie Nelson, George Strait, and Jerry Jeff Walker, along with more modern stars like Garth Brooks, LeAnn Rimes, and Lyle Lovett. Just down the street, Grapevine, an outdoor winery, features live music, along with several bars lining the strip. There are wide grassy areas where kids can play and a local ice cream favorite, Rhea’s, perfect for satisfying a sweet tooth.
